Science Saturdays

Review of my project to teach science to some kids at the Mesquite Library
Week 1: Airplanes

The first week was all about airplanes. I printed out a few plane types and had the kids choose which one they wanted to do. After they had made their airplanes, I handed out paper clips, and they placed it on different parts of their plane. We then tested it by throwing them across the landing pad I made. During this time we discussed why some planes flew better than others. We also tried the paperclips on different parts of the plane, and I explained why some places worked and others did not.

Week 2: Legos

The second week I had no instruction plans, but rather helped watch over the kids while they played with Legos.

Week 3: Snow

We had a large amount of this fake snow, so I thought that it would be the perfect time to talk about weather patterns and the water cycle. The students were pretty young so I didn't go into too much detail. But I did learn a lot, as this was my second day instructing young kids. First we played an icebreaker game, where I had the kids make up their partner's name, as long as it had to do with snow. Then I talked about the phases, and had the kids draw pictures of the water cycle along with me. Lastly, I pulled out the snow, and they played with it for a while

Week 4: Clouds
I did a workshop where I tought the kids about clouds, how they form, and rain fall. I started out the session by playing an icebreaker game, we then memorized each other's names, and I started instruction. The class was escpecially young this week, so most of the time we just drew pictures. At the end I pulled out my bottle and created a cloud in a bottle as demonstration.
Week 5: Batteries

This week we did a classic science experiment were the kids built batteries. First we did an icebreaker game, and since I had many of the same kids, we played the same game (come up with a name for your partner, as long as it has to do with electricity). I tought them about what a battery was, electricity and how it flows. We drew pictures, and then we got out the lemon and stared to build.
